Job Title: Experimental Physicist
Description:

Implement High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) target experiments in the Heavy Ion Fusion Science (HIFS) program. Responsible for development and operation of high speed optical diagnostics for warm dense matter (WDM) targets in beam-driven WDM experiments, and development of targets and target chamber.

Duties

Required - Develop high speed diagnostics, targets and target chamber for HEDP and WDM experiments as part of the HIFS/HEDP program. Advance the state of the art in experimental target physics and diagnostics including optical, electrical, and backlighting techniques. Operate target diagnostics; present data analyze (compare with simulations) and interpret results in relation to High Energy Density Physics predictions. Perform beam-heated HEDP target experiments in close collaboration with other experimenters and with guidance of experimental models developed by theoretical and simulation physicists. Publish results.

Qualifications

Required - Experience with experiments studying matter heated to high temperature by a particle beam or other intense energy source. Experience with high speed optical and electrical measurement techniques in a laboratory environment. Experience with beam and plasma diagnostics. Expertise in data acquisition and controls systems. Experience interacting with a network of theorists on and off-site. Demonstrated experimental skills in working with laboratory test and measurement equipment. Demonstrated ability to work in a research group environment and prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings. Must be independent, innovative and able to design, guide, and carry through an experiment from initiation to meaningful conclusion, in collaboration with a team of engineers, physicists and technical support staff. Ability to publish results in a timely manner. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ph.D. degree in experimental plasma Physics or equivalent experience.

Desired - Knowledge of and experience with physics of intense heavy ion beams, including particle production, acceleration, and emittance control.

Notes

This is a 2-year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
