DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Sandia’s Biosystems Research Department, located in Livermore, Calif., was established in 1999 to perform biological research with national-security and energy-security applications. Our highly interdisciplinary research group focuses on both basic and applied biological research. We address problems with strong ties to national security, such as bioenergy and biodefense, through advanced technology development and new research approaches. The department is composed of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical and physical), and engineering (chemical, mechanical, and bioengineering). Currently, we have ongoing projects in the areas of biofuels (cellulosic ethanol and algal biodiesel production), immunology, cellular signaling involved in innate immunity, medical diagnostics, and therapeutics screening, as well as basic research studies in biomaterials design, protein structure/function determination, proteomics, computational biology, and microfluidics.

JOB DESCRIPTION
We seek a postdoctoral research scientist who will apply microfluidics/microseparations/MEMS technology to chemical and biochemical analysis. The individual will be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes analytical chemists, physical chemists, engineers, and biologists and will help develop miniaturized devices and techniques applicable to clinical diagnostics, single-cell analysis, and protein/DNA separations. The research will involve work with lab-on-a-chip techniques, spectroscopy, microscopy, and mass spectrometry.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a recent Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical biochemistry, or engineering (chemical, mechanical, or bioengineering) and extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: microfluidic devices or components, electrophoresis, chromatography, immunoassays, microarrays (DNA and protein), and cell-based assays. Other required qualifications include a strong record of high technical achievement, as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals, and the demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research. In addition, knowledge of one or more detection technologies, such as fluorescence, electrochemical, and mass spectrometry, is highly desirable.
