The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is a new multi-organizational research center comprising world-class resources and expertise located in one facility at Emeryville, California. The goal of JBEI is to use rapidly advancing scientific techniques, such as systems and synthetic biology, to accelerate development of the nation's biofuels industry. JBEI is a U.S. Department of Energy funded Bioenergy Research Center, managed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) with partners from 5 internationally recognized scientific institutions: Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), University of California-Davis (UCD), University of California-Berkeley (UCB), and the Carnegie Institution for Science.
This position is an engineering and research appointment responsible for the primary research in a laboratory setting with the Physical Biosciences Division. The incumbent will work as a member of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) team in the field of computational systems biological support for biofuel production.
Duties - The primary duties of this position are to provide core primary research in (initially)
- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all work performed to ensure that others could duplicate results - Prepare presentations and manuscripts for internal use and peer reviewed publication. - Maintain accurate documentation and source-code control for all work-product
- PhD. in an Engineering or Quantitative Biological discipline or a related field of science - Demonstrated high-level skills, knowledge and work experience in engineering, computer science, and biology especially in regard protein biochemistry, structure and genome-scale data - Must have high analytical skill and programming skill (language unspecified but prefer C, C++, or Java and PERL), familiarity with tools such as matlab and Mathematica, experience with SQL database construction and maintenance as well as web-based, user-friendly, interfaces to these tools and databases - Ability to creatively work, within a team of scientists, with problems in microbial comparative functional genomics with emphasis on metabolic pathway analysis and protein functional prediction and design - Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to accomplish goals as a team member - Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with programmers, engineers, post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduates from multiple backgrounds - Must have ability to handle multiple projects and tasks in parallel and meet programmatic milestones and project timelines - Demonstrated experience with high-level problem solving in computational biology
