DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Information Security Department is responsible for computer and cybersecurity operations and research at Sandia/California. Research areas include data protection and data movement within various network environments. Staff members also provide data protection services. Current research projects include peer-to-peer encryption, advanced wireless and network intrusion-detection systems, automated network countermeasures, network entity profiling, and network traffic analysis. In addition, our departmental expertise extends into the areas of wireless IP networks, network visualization, security analysis (systems and operations research), reverse engineering and malware analysis, and vulnerability analysis. Our department also manages the Center for Cyber Defenders Program and other cybereducation activities.


JOB DESCRIPTION

The Computer & Network Security Department seeks an information security specialist to join our research & development team. This specialist will develop new computer & network security systems, both hardware and software. In addition, the specialist will propose and conduct research of new security technologies to benefit Sandia, the Department of Energy, and other government agencies. Other responsibilities include publishing and presenting new findings to the information-security community at large, mentoring student interns in short-term projects, and supporting Sandia computer and network security operations by developing tools for operational use and analyzing current threats to information security and systems.


QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Ph.D. or M.S. in computer science, computer engineering, operations research, policy analysis, or another field related to computer and network security. Excellent B.S.-level candidates with a desire to pursue graduate education will also be considered. Other required qualifications include strong academic standing (3.5 GPA or higher) or equivalent experience; proficiency in computer and network security systems, software, and/or hardware; and software development experience in multiple languages. Candidates must be willing to travel; must be able to work in a collaborative research environment; must possess demonstrated initiative and the ability to solve problems, prioritize work, and make decisions; and must exhibit excellent communication skills, including writing and formal briefings.
Candidates with experience in designing and analyzing scalable distributed algorithms in wireless sensor networks, high-performance parallel computing environments, or similar large-scale distributed computational environments are desired for this position. Other desired qualifications include computer hardware architecture knowledge and UNIX operating system programming skills (e.g., extensive development experience in the Linux kernel or a real-time embedded operating system). Experience in the following areas is also desirable: large-scale scientific computing ; object-oriented programming techniques and design patterns; Python, C, C++, C#, FORTRAN, and/or Java (J2EE) programming; software and firmware development on microcontroller and programmable logic devices, such as FPGAs; the design and development of applications using modern visualization techniques; systems analysis and/or operations research; and computer and network security operations.


Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required.
