| Job Title: | Joint Postdoctoral Appointee |
| Description: |
X-ray scattering is an important technique to study the coupling between the charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in condensed matter systems. In the past several years, we used high-pressure synchrotron diffraction experiments on beamline 4-ID at the Advanced Photon Source to study the suppression of itinerant antiferromagnetic order in pure chromium metal and established the value of chromium at high pressure as a model system for the study of magnetic quantum phase transitions. We would like to extend these studies to a suite of other correlated materials, where high pressures reveal the roles of competing ground states and quantum fluctuations without the application of symmetry breaking fields. The joint appointment is between Thomas Rosenbaum's group at The University of Chicago and George Srajer's group at the Advanced Photon Source. The successful candidate will perform synchrotron diffraction experiments at the Advanced Photon Source and complementary magnetic and transport measurements at The University of Chicago. A Ph.D. in physics or a related field is required, and experience in synchrotron experiments and low temperature techniques is desirable. Argonne is a U.S. Department of Energy Laboratory managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC, and is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Chicago, USA, on a beautiful 1500-acre campus-like environment. Both Argonne and the University of Chicago are equal opportunity employers and value diversity in their workforces. The appointment will formally be at Argonne, which offers excellent career growth potential for its entire staff. Interested individuals should submit their CV, list of publications and the names of three references through the Argonne website at http://www.anl.gov/jobs job search for requisition XSD 313494 by August 31, 2008. For additional information, please contact George Srajer at srajerg@aps.anl.gov or Thomas Rosenbaum at tfr@uchicago.edu. |
