| Description: |
Graduate student positions (M.S. and Ph.D. level) are available in the Immunotrafficking Laboratory within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University of Manitoba to pursue interdisciplinary research in immune cell trafficking starting as early as in Jan. 2009. The main goal of the lab is to achieve a quantitative and systematic understanding of immune cell trafficking in complex cellular microenvironment with relevance to physiological problems and diseases. Microfluidic devices, mathematical modeling, biology and immunology approaches are integrated in these studies. Specific research projects include (1) development of novel microfluidic devices for cell migration research; (2) experimental studies of immune cell migration in complex chemoattractant fields; (3) mathematical modeling of immune cell migration and chemotaxis; (4) investigation of immune cell electrotaxis. Students with background in physics, applied physics, biomedical engineering and related fields are particularly encouraged to apply. Previous experience in microfabrication, mathematical modeling, cell culture and optical microscopy will be helpful but not required. A keen interest in interdisciplinary research and a strong commitment to academic excellence is essential. Possibility of co-advising and collaboration with faculties from other departments also exists. Perspective students are advised to contact Dr. Francis Lin for more information. Initial application should include a cover letter and a detailed resume. Received applications will be reviewed immediately.
